Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., is the Interim Speaker.
Patrick McHenry, a Republican member of Congress from North Carolina, was named interim speaker following the historic removal of Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as Speaker of the House.
NumbersUSA gave him grades for both his voting record and his career on the Hill.
NumbersUSA gives an A- grade for his voting record in the current Congress. His career grade was B, with a 77 percent rating.
McHenry was elevated not by a vote on the floor, but through the actions of an obscure part of House leadership machinery that deals with succession in emergency situations. He will be expected to preside over the selection process of a new Speaker.
Will he run for this position? Who knows? The House is moving into new territory. No other speaker has ever been removed in the middle of a term.
McHenry was only 29 when he entered the House. He is now the deputy chief whip for the GOP’s slim majority. His committee assignments are financial. We didn’t hear his name mentioned among the House members who led the battle against McCarthy.
