Op-ed: Mexican Consul must leave
The U.S. State Department should declare Mexican Consul Juan Sabines Persona Non Grata for his behavior that is inconsistent with his diplomatic position. Senor Sabines, the Consul of Mexico in Orlando, Florida has crossed the line by publicly criticizing Governor Ron DeSantis, and Florida’s newly passed law criminalizing the transport of illegal immigrants into the state. There should be consequences.
Sabines’ advocacy for the rights a Mexican national arrested in the U.S., Raquel Lopez-Aguilar is not relevant. He is facing felony charges of transporting illegal immigrants into Florida. Sabines’s consular duties include helping Lopez Aguilar find a lawyer, communicating with the accused’s relatives, and informing his Mexican foreign ministry about the case. Sabines’s duties do not include publicly criticizing DeSantis for being “antiimmigrant”, or calling the Florida statute racist. Sabines’s consular privileges and immunities do not entitle to him to act like any other open-border Democrat politician within the Florida State Legislature.
Sabines’s rhetoric speaks for itself. The ambassador said to the media, “I asked myself again: Could it have been that [Lopez Aguilar] is brown [that was arrested]?” This law is clearly racist. “I doubt that what happened to a Mexican would have happened to a blond and blue-eyed Argentinian.
When are Mexican diplomats permitted to mau-mau Florida’s governor and law enforcement officials?
